Last week Grade 10 students participated in the annual Civics Fair where they were able to interact with town departments set up at “college-fair” style tables to explore the role of local government in the US political system and reinforce the importance of civic engagement and self-government! Many thanks to the presenters from the Town of Carver for making this event a success: Mark Pineo & Lisa Eriksson (Veterans Affairs), Cara Dahill (Town Clerk), Stephanie Clougherty (School Committee), Assistant Deputy Boyle (Carver Fire), Gary Flaherty (Conservation), Deputy Sheri Sarmento (Police), Mike Ryan (EMS), Kevin Forgue (Health Agent), Dave Siedentopf (Operations & Maintenance), Robert Fennesy (Town Administrator), Tom Bott (Town Planner), Tom Walsh (Emergency Management), and Carole Julius (Library Director).
We are proud to announce that Patriots’ Hall of Famer, Andre Tippett came to Carver Middle High School on October 10, 2023 to present the Carver Middle High School Football Program with a $1,000 donation on behalf of the Kraft family and New England Charitable Foundation in honor of Head Coach, Benjamin Shuffain who was chosen as the Patriots High School Coach of the week. Last season, the Crusaders finished their 2022 season at 3-8 and now are sitting at 5-0 after Head Coach Ben Shuffain led Carver to their biggest win in 20-plus years since its EMass Division 4 Super Bowl appearance against Fairhaven in 2000. In a stunning overtime thriller on Friday, October 6th, marked the first time that Carver upset Cohasset to end a 17-year losing streak and remain undefeated on the season. Additionally, the win plots Carver for its first winning season since 2015, when it finished 6-5. The Crusaders offense has averaged 47.2 points per game through the first five weeks of the season, with the high-mark of 55 points set against McCann Technical School on September 23rd, and arguably the most impressive showing of 42 in its biggest test against Cohasset on Friday. Head Coach Ben Shuffain took over the program last year after moving his family from Mansfield to Carver and has instantly changed the culture of our program in a positive way. “In such a short period of time, Coach Shuffain has made such a profound impact on our student-athletes and our community. He is a tremendous role model and would not want any other coach leading our program”, says athletic director Christopher Carbone. Coach Shuffain has turned Carver football into a family; a family that is there for one another 24/7, 365 days a year. The student-athletes and coaches alike are always improving and have bought in. His ability to effect a positive turnaround for our football program does not go unnoticed. Ben Shuffain adds, “this team just has it, they have the tenacity, and fought through adversity and we hadn’t seen that in the first four weeks, but we saw it in this one,” said Shuffain. “I think the sky’s the limit for this team. I think (this win) is huge for this program, this town, we ‘ve had a lot of struggles lately with some loss, and this team has come together the last few weeks.” We are incredibly proud of our teams’ accomplishments and look forward to building on the success we have had thus far. SEPTEMBER 2023

Congratulations to the following CMHS Student Athletes on their record achievements in fall sports: TYLER LENNOX:  who broke two school football records this past week – 48 touchdowns and 4561 passing yards, surpassing records set 31 years ago by J. Congratulations to the Camp Burgess Fundraiser Winners:  Grady Foley sold the most raffle tickets for our “All Around Town” raffle basket and was rewarded with a ride to school in a fire truck. He invited the 2nd place seller, Aidan Clear, to join him, along with his friend Jackson Witkowski. Our school nurse, Jessica Foley, was also on the truck with the boys. Thank you to Assistant Deputy Chief Boyle and Carver Fire Department for rewarding our top fundraisers (Grady $850 and Aiden $650) for raising the most amount of money for our Camp Burgess Scholarship Fund.  Thank you to everyone in the community who participated and supported our students!

Congratulations to Sofie De Coste who was chosen to attend the Girls State sponsored by the Plymouth branch of the American Legion.  Girls State is a hands-on experience which teaches Americanisms and the political process.  Attendees are divided into cities, counties, and political parties. The attendees participate in mock government by developing city responsibilities, running for political office and debating and passing legislation. The representatives also have the opportunity to meet and engage with state representatives and senators.  Sofie represented her state as a legislator and studied local, county and state government.  She was also selected to be one of two state senators to represent MA in the National Girl’s State in Washington D.C. She was recognized by the School Committee and Administration for this tremendous opportunity and honor.
