2018-2019 Crusader Excellence

MAY 2019


Congrats to Unified Sports Members who participated in the State Track and Field Competition on Wednesday, May 29th. Veronica Littlefield – 2nd place in both the 100 meter and shot put Riley Lipper – 5th place in shot put Jake Cotter – 1st place in the long jump Andrew Walker– 1st place in javelin and 5th place in 100 meter Hayden Roche – 2nd place in long jump and 3rd place in the 100 meter Congratulations to these participants and also to Emma Reilly, Joey Anderson, and Jade LaBrecque for contributing to the team success this year!
On Thursday, May 28, the Caring Crusaders under the leadership of Christina Nolan and Chrissy McKenna made Carver Schools and the Carver Cares group proud by presenting to over 100 students from 14 different schools in the region on their Sticker Shock Campaign at the 2nd Annual “Be in the Know” Youth Conference.   Due to their presentation, other schools have already expressed interest in replicating the campaign in their communities.  
On Friday, May 17, the High School Concert and Symphonic Bands under the director of Mr. Jeremy Teunis received ratings of ‘Excellent’ at the ‘Music in the Parks Festival’ at Six Flags New England.   The adjudicator was the current band director at Harvard University.  Congratulations to these music students for this accomplishment and having received this praise from such an accomplished conductor.
Under the leadership of Mr. McLean, Mr. Tresca, and Mr. Antell, on Sunday, May 5th and Carver was well represented in Boston with 37 students, 3 adults and $2,845 raised for the Walk for Hunger – not counting other students who went on their own or with friends. Many thanks to everyone who donated money to help Carver give a large donation!

MARCH 2019


Seventeen Carver students, grades 10-12, attended the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils annual conference and are proud to share that the CMHS Student Council earned two council awards for their hard work and commitment to organize and participate in a variety school activities, community events, participation multiple community service events and fundraisers, and involvement in special Olympic and best buddies inclusive events.  They earned the highest council honor:  Gold Council of Excellence and also earned Top 10 Project for an inclusive Best Buddies Leadership Event we organized and hosted.  This project was recognized for 1 of 10 best projects in the State. Congratulations to the students and their advisors, Mr. Chris Tresca and Mr. Dillon Antell.     

FEBRUARY 2019


Congratulations to the following  Carver Middle High School students who have demonstrated excellence in the Arts: Congrats to the CMHS Culinary Team: Torri Dibble, Chris Choi-Harlow, Trevor Drakakis, Payton Liddell and TJ Booth lead by teacher, Dan “Chef” Portelance.                   The 2018-2019 culinary team took 1st place in the ProStart Culinary State Championships held at Gillette Stadium and the Management Team placed 3rd in the state.  Senior, Trevor Drakakis was also awarded the “Jarvis Green award for Best Dish.” Carver Culinary will represent Massachusetts at the ProStart Student Invitational, May 8-10, 2019 in Washington D.C.

HS Students from both Student Council and Best Buddies welcomed members of Silver Lake Student Council and Best Buddies in our 6th annual leadership summit. Friendships were made, group activities challenged our kids to problem solve and communicate… over all great things from our students! Thank you to Mr. Tresca, Mr. Antell, Mrs. Townsend, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Willett for helping this event to happen, to Silver Lake for attending and helping to organize some of the activities and Chef Portelance for providing a great lunch.  

NOVEMBER 2018


On Saturday November 3, 2018 22 students from CMHS volunteered at the annual Edaville Rail Run. The race helps to raise funds to support the Dorine Merritt Memorial Fund. The fund gives financial support to a a variety of youth organizations in the Carver community with a large portion funding an annual scholarship given to a Carver resident who is or will be attending a nursing school in the future.  The students included; Morgan Allegrini, Teresa Blotner, Aubrey Cheney, Emma Corbin, Alex Diogenes, Ben Diogenes, Sam Dipasqua, Abbey Earls, Mike Ferrari, Emily Grover, Jeffrey Hayward, Ari Hunter, Hadi Kishbach, Mya LaBreque, Gemma Marshal, Charlotte McElroy, Emily McGillicuddy, Frank Santos, Elizabeth Stagnitta, Emily Strojny, Tyler Turner, and Jacob Wilkins under the direction of Thomas McLean, CMHS teacher.

OCTOBER 2018


On Thursday, October 24, two sheriff’s department K9 officers came to Carver Middle High School to visit with Mr. Tresca’s Junior and Senior Justice in Society class. They discussed rights and searches under the 4th Amendment, explained how they train their dogs to be patrol and search dogs and demonstrated a few training exercises including obedience, narcotic searches and criminal apprehension.  The kids had a great time learning directly from the professionals who keep us safe every day. Thank you to Mr. Tresca and to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department for offering this unique on learning experience.          
On Saturday, October 13, 2018 a great group of kids, parents and Best Buddies Advisors, Angie Townsend and Anne Gallagher fought through the rain and represented Carver Middle High school at the Best Buddies Friendship walk in Pawtucket, RI .  Kudos to all of these students and families who walked for #inclusion!


SEPTEMBER 2018


Congrats to M.H.S. seniors Samuel Gregory, Joshua Kennedy, Hunter Leininger, Christopher Showan, and Benjamin Walker were recently selected by the History Department and Principal Holley to participate in the eleventh annual James Otis Lecture Series on Monday September 24 in Boston with History Department Chair, Brian Lamoureux. The series is presented every September by the Massachusetts chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates to help commemorate Constitution Day, the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, and to help honor the memory of the great people who created our government. The event was held at historical Faneuil Hall in Boston. The students heard from distinguished guests including featured speakers Professor Thomas Healy and the Honorable Ralph D. Gants, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The scholars delivered remarks and answered questions from students during a program entitled “Oliver Wendell Holmes, the First Amendment and the Role of Free Speech in America.” The students have gained key insights into the framing and interpretation of the US Constitution and are now recognized as “James Otis Scholars.”

On Saturday, September 15, 35 members (and family members) of the Environmental Club and Honor Society under the direction of Mr. Dave Wechter and Mr. Jeff Mallon participated once again in their annual CoastSweep in Plymouth Harbor.  Together, they collected over 140 pounds of trash and received high praise from the community!  Thanks to all for your selfless service!
 
Under the leadership of Ms. Mary Willett, Ms. Pam Reed and Mr. Michael Santos, Carver Middle High School has received national recognition as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, and will be receiving national banner recognition for its efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities. Carver Middle High School is receiving this honor as a result of meeting national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy and respect.  Carver Middle High School is 1 of 10 schools in Massachusetts and 131 schools nationally to receive this distinction. A Special Olympics Unified Champion School has an inclusive school climate and exudes a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff. A Unified Champion School receiving national banner recognition is one that has demonstrated commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community.  http://www.specialolympicsma.org.
