MAY 2018
On Sunday, May 6, 2018, 31 Grade 10,11 and 12 students along with Student Council Advisors, Chris Tresca and Dillon Antell, represented the Carver Middle High School and our community amazingly fundraising and participating in the Walk for Hunger yesterday in Boston. As a school they raised over $2,500 for Project Bread and walked between 10-20 miles to raise awareness for children and families who struggle with hunger each day. While walking Mr. Tresca noted he saw other students who traveled up with their families and friends to also add to the well meaning. Carver was well represented in Boston!!
Student Council Advisors also offered special recognition to teacher and Language Arts Department Chair, Tom McLean, who (per usual) raised over $1,300 through the donations from many of our colleagues.

APRIL 2018
This past weekend (April 29) CMHS students, Darren Foster and Kevin Shott, under the leadership of Chef and teacher, Dan Portelance, represented Massachusetts at the 17th annual National Restaurant Association’s National ProStart Invitational. As a result of their hard work Darren and Kevin placed fourth in the competition.
This is the first time any team from Massachusetts placed in the top five at the Invitational. By placing fourth Darren and Kevin were awarded several scholarships to several state and private colleges.
Darren and Kevin also offers their thanks all the members of the Carver Public School system for all of your support throughout the years, and recognized that each one had an important part in their success this weekend.

Cranberry Village Volunteers
This past Saturday (April 28) on a beautiful spring morning nine MHS Sophomores & Juniors participated in a landscaping project at Cranberry Village in Carver as part of their community service requirement. Students helped the residents to rake leaves and to beautify their Clubhouse area. Afterwards students were treated to lunch by the kind and appreciative residents.
Accompanied by history department chair, Brian Lamoureux the students included: Tiffany Ward, Jacey Ruzzano, Ava Reagan, Haley Mann, Robekka Northrup, Mya LaBrecque, Sean Jones and Jade LaBrecque(not pictured).
Over the past several years, CMHS students have volunteered at a number of cleanups and fundraisers organized by Helping Hands—a group servicing the residents of Cranberry Village. Students who are interested in serving at a summer fundraiser June 23rd should sign up with Mr. Lamoureux.
Congratulations to members of this year’s Civics Team for a strong Runner-Up finish at the 4th Annual Civics Bee held Sunday, April 7th at PCIS, finishing only one point behind the winning team from Sacred Heart.
This year’s Bee was focused on “Voting Rights” and included teams from Plymouth North & South; Carver; Silver Lake; Rising Tide; and Sacred Heart. The Plymouth Area League of Women’s Voters has sponsored the Bee annually as part of their mission to educate the public and to encourage voter participation. The competition was extremely close. After the opening round of forty questions, Carver, Silver Lake, and Sacred Heart advanced to the Playoff round with identical scores of twenty-six questions correct. In the fifteen question playoff, Sacred Heart answered one more question correctly than Carver & Silver Lake.
Mr. Lamoureux-the team’s advisor-was very proud of the students’ preparation, poise, and team-work and hopes the current Juniors will be back to participate again next year.

Monday, April 2, 2018 MHS student council members attended their Regional Spring Leadership conference at Duxbury HS where the following leaders earned top honors:
- Student Council President,Sam Santos, was recognized for serving as the 2017-2018 Regional Vice President and was also the recipient of the John Schrader Leadership Spirit Award for our 39 school region.
- Student Council Spirit Coordinator, Jenna Sweeney, was elected as 2018-2019 Regional Webmaster for our 39 school region.
- Student Council Delegate,Josh Kennedy, was elected as 2018-2019 Regional Publicity Coordinator for our 39 school region.
- Student Council Advisor, Christopher Tresca, was the recipient of the “I Believe in You” John “Jack” Scanlan SEMASC Advisor of the Year Award.

March 6
With the guidance and instruction of Chef Portelance the Culinary team lead by Chef Portelance of Torri Dibble, Trevor Drakakis, Alexis Durham, Kailey Neil and Sawyer Shaw competed in the Massachusetts ProStart Invitational. They overcame some equipment failures and missing utensil issues to earn second place in the competition. While the Management team consisting of Darren Foster and Kevin Shott showed extreme poise and professionalism as they walked away with the State Title.

Congratulations and Thank you!Mass Insight Education and Research has named Erin Young, Math Teacher and Department Chair a Partners in Excellence Teacher Award recipient for her exemplary work in the AP STEM and English Program. On Sunday, January 28, Student Council and Best Buddies both traveled to Rockland and competed in Special Olympics Bocce tournament where all 11 kids had a blast and played so well together. Thank you to both clubs for coming together to make this annual event another great success!

The Carver Robotics club brought both a High School team and a Middle School team to the Southeastern MA VEX Qualifying Competition held at Bristol Community College on Saturday January 6th. There were a total of 24 teams competing at the event.
The HS Team did very well competing in the matches throughout the day. At the end of the event, the HS Team won the “Design Award” for best design in the competition thus advancing to the HS New England Regional Qualification Match being held at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA in March.
The MS Team also did well competing. At the end of the event, the MS Team won the Middle School Level “Team Excellence Award”. This is the top award presented at the event for all Middle Schools competing. This achievement advances the Middle School to the MS New England Regional Match being held in Framingham, MA in March.

Our students did an outstanding job representing our school at the Waterfront food festival in Plymouth, this past weekend (Nov. 18), and had a ton of fun as the same time. Carver took home four awards; People’s and Judge’s Choice for Best Party Food and People’s and Judge’s Choice for Best Booth Design.

Congratulations to Carver Middle School student Corin Clougherty & her fellow Girl Scout, Alexis Heidt of Troop 85305 for earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award for their Operation Vegetation Education – “OVE” – Project!!!
Their “OVE” mission was to educate younger Girl Scouts as well as their communities about the importance of eating & snacking healthy, the ease of growing your own garden while growing their own garden at the Crystal Lake Community Garden in Carver, the simplicity of making healthy snacks, and the importance of donating healthy foods & snacks to local food pantry by hosting a food drive for the Shane Gives Thanks Food Pantry at Carver Shaw’s.
Alexis & Corin presented at the Carver Elementary Schools Health & Wellness Fair and the Carver Farmers Market, and planned & led a workshop for their Sister Brownie Girl Scouts, Both students worked on their project for over 50 hours despite it only having a 20 hour requirement by Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.
OCTOBER 2017
On Saturday October 28, six CMHS Juniors participated in a landscaping project at Cranberry Village in Carver as part of their community service requirement. The students helped to plant over 200 bulbs and were treated to lunch by the appreciative and kind residents.

From Mr. Wechter, Environmental Club Advisor:
This past Saturday [October 14], the Environmental Club sponsored a Plymouth Beach cleanup. It was special to see students from grades 6-12, parents and Carver Alumni work together for a wonderful cause. In 2 hours, we collected and recorded 55 lbs of trash. 55 lbs doesn’t sound like a lot, but when it’s mostly wrappers, fishing line, and aluminum cans, it’s impressive.

I would like to share a great citizen moment that I had the pleasure to participate in this past Saturday [September 24] spending 10 hours with 3 exceptional Juniors from CMHS assisting an organization known as Project Citizens.
Clare Manning, Hailee Oriola and Torri Dibble traveled with me to Boston to volunteer and assist 450+ legal immigrants from across the state begin their process to become Naturalized U.S. citizens. The majority of these immigrants come from the Caribbean countries but they are from all over the world.

- with their 20 page application
- get 75% of registrants their $725 fees waived
- began registration with walk-ins
- assisted with childcare for parents
We also had the privilege to meet and speak to Mayor Marty Walsh which Clare, Torri and Hailee each loved talking to and who was very friendly and appreciative.
This is my second time taking a small group of Carver students to Citizenship Day. Every student was a model citizen who acted both helpful and mature beyond their years, representing Carver proudly.
