Literacy Program
Five years ago, the Carver School Committee set out to improve the literacy skills of the
students in Carver by establishing a district wide goal of improving literacy instruction in all
K–12 classrooms. The Carver Public School’s priority was to and continues to be to
implement research based literacy programs that support a three tiered approach to
delivering instruction at each grade level. The staff of the Primary/Elementary School
unanimously selected the Scott Foresman Reading Street (2007) program as their core
program to be delivered as Tier 1 instruction to all students. The program helps the staff
teach all the students through whole group instruction as well as small group instruction
based on differentiated needs of the students. In addition to the Reading Street program,
the special education teachers, reading intervention teachers, and some classroom teachers
are implementing the Scott Foresman Sidewalks program to deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3
instruction to students who are in need of more intensive instruction.
The Primary/Elementary School faculty is working hard to ensure that all the literacy
activities they engage in are consistent with the priorities and goals of the school literacy
plan. Along with the Carver School Committee, the staff and administration are committed
to improving literacy instruction to ensure all Carver students can read and write, at grade
level, by the end of third grade.
