Yik Yak App
Students have dramatically increased their use of a phone app called Yik Yak. This app allows users make anonymous posts which can be viewed by anyone else with Yik Yak who is within approximately 2 miles. It appears that almost all of the posts made on Yik Yak in this area have been made by middle and high school-age students. While Yik Yak is not accessible in our building due to the company’s own policy of disabling the app at schools, students are reading posts and talking about them when they arrive at school. The comments have been almost universally cruel and petty. They have had a negative impact on the lives of students in and out of school.
Teachers, counselors, and administrators are helping individuals that have been affected by these posts. In the meantime, Carver community members are encouraged to eliminate access to this app. The icon for the app is displayed below. It can be downloaded to any android or iPhone. Please encourage any young person you know to delete the app from his or her phone.
