First Harvest

This summer, Carley Ryan, student coordinator and project originator of Carver’s Living Learning Laboratory, harvested the first crop of veggies and provided the Council on Aging fresh organically grown produce for their seniors’ lunches.   Student volunteers planted a diverse late spring crop that includes varieties of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, squashes and herbs. Seedlings were donated by Cohenno’s Greenhouse and local carver residents. The Living Learning Laboratory was created to educate on sustainability; supplement food at the pantries, school cafeteria and culinary class, and create connections with the community. The “hoop house” construction materials were funded by A.D. Makepeace’s Neighborhood grant.
