MATH RESOURCES
Hello Carver Kids and Families!
Families often ask what their child can do over the summer to stay fresh with their math skills and prevent summer slide. We are excited to address this question. Quite simply, students should continue to engage in mathematical thinking over the summer. We believe that regular practice over the summer will help students maintain or strengthen their mathematical skills that were further developed this past year.
We are happy to offer a few opportunities for families who are interested in supporting their math skills this summer. Our hope is that students continue to engage in mathematical thinking. While the suggested activities are NOT mandatory, we hope that families will find time to engage in these opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support and have a great summer!

READING RESOURCES
Summer Reading
Reading during the summer months is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child and to continue to foster growth in vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Carver Elementary School does not have a reading requirement during the summer, although we highly encourage families to visit the library and to continue to promote a love of reading.
Attached you will see some activities that may be of interest to you and your child:
- Reading BINGO Boards for students at each grade level
- Suggested books for students entering each grade level
- Literacy Night with the Wareham Gatemen
*There is nothing that needs to be returned to school when we come back from summer vacation; these may simply be fun activities to do with your child.

Suggested Summer Books
Entering Grades 1st-5th
These are suggested books for students entering each specific grade level. Reading any of these books is not mandatory, although we highly encourage students to read and/or be read throughout the summer. Some of the titles may be difficult for students and some may be easier. Students do not need to choose books just at their grade level, they can always explore a book from another grade level (for example, a 5th grader can choose a book from the 4th grade list).
An easy way to find a “just right book” is:
|
If your child is interested in one of the titles that appears to be difficult, there are many strategies you can use:
- Share the book and read it together (you read one page and your child reads the next).
- Read the book to your child. This is a wonderful way to connect with your child and for them to hear fluent and expressive reading, as well as build their own vocabulary and comprehension skills.
- Get the book on tape or through Carver Public Library’s online system. Listen to the story while in the car or encourage your child to listen independently.
- Remember that having a discussion with your child about what they are reading is critical to building their comprehension, discussion, and vocabulary skills.
- Even if a book may appear to be too difficult, if it is engaging and motivating to your child, that engagement may support your child as they read.
If none of these books are appealing, a reputable and easy-to-use website is Scholastic, specifically go to: https://shop.scholastic.com/parent-ecommerce/parent-store.html and filter by age, grade, subject, series, characters, and even format. You can find any of the books on this website at the local library (you do not need to purchase them through Scholastic).
