Gr 8 – NAEP Assessment

On Wednesday, January 30, Grade 8 students will participate in the NAEP Assessment.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called The Nation’s Report Card, is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in public and private schools in the United States know and are able to do in various subjects. Since 1969, NAEP has been a common  measure of student achievement across the country in mathematics, reading, science, and many other subjects. Depending on the assessment, NAEP report cards provide national, state, and some district-level results, as well as results for different demographic groups.

NAEP is a congressionally mandated project of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), located within the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. NAEP data are also  used in special studies conducted by NCES. These have included comparisons of proficiency standards across state assessments; insights from high school transcripts, including courses taken and credits earned; and in-depth looks at how different demographic groups perform across different types of schools.

The National Assessment Governing Board, an independent, bipartisan organization made up of governors, state school superintendents, teachers, researchers, and representatives of the general public, sets policy for NAEP.

The Nation’s Report Card website has resources for all audiences (http://www.nationsreportcard.gov/)  in addition, please note the  following resources that may be helpful to parent/guardians and students:

Available 2018-19 Preschool Role Models

The Carver Public Schools’ Preschool Program, located at the Carver Elementary School, is currently scheduling appointments for screenings for role model slots in our new preschool classroom for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year.  This is a morning program that will meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:15-10:45.

Screenings will be held by appointment only on Friday, January 4 and Friday, January 11, 2019.

A screening is required for acceptance into the program. Children considered are those who do not currently receive special education services and are not in need of special education services. Applicants are expected to demonstrate age appropriate skills (within 6 months) in the areas of speech and language, cognitive/school readiness, fine and gross motor development, and social/emotional and behavioral development. In addition, a child must be at least 3 years of age by September 1, 2018 and toilet trained.  They must also be a resident of Carver and families must provide transportation to and from the program.  Those children found eligible will be entered into a lottery.  Appropriate role model students who are not selected in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list.  Please note that slots are limited.

This program for role model students is a fee based program.  Each half day session is $12.00.

If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact the Carver Elementary School Office at (508) 866-6210.

Nov. 16-17: HS Drama Presents: Once on This Island

Friday, November 16, 7p – Saturday, November 17, 7p
Admission:  $10 – Tickets sold at the door.

A Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid and is fun for the whole family!

Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune’s life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel’s heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.

Once on this Island is from the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime)
